How to Change Audio Pitch by Semitones

Transpose recordings while keeping their pace, understand semitone shifts and voice formants, and compare MP3 or WAV exports before saving.

Start with a small shift

Open the audio pitch changer and try −2 or +2 semitones. Negative values lower every sound; positive values raise it. The available range is −12 to +12 in whole semitones. This tool changes a whole recording, not separate instruments or selected notes.

Work out the musical interval

Twelve semitones make an octave. +12 doubles frequencies, −12 halves them, and +2 is a whole tone. To move a backing track to a singer's range, compare it with an instrument or a reference note. The tool does not detect the starting key, so a shift value alone cannot tell you the final key.

Keep pace separate from pitch

Pitch shifting here combines a frequency change with compensating time stretching. The output should remain close to the original duration, though short processing differences are possible. If you want slower practice without transposing notes, use audio speed adjustment and read the speed guide.

Listen for changes in voice character

Formants help shape a voice's character. This tool does not preserve them separately from pitch, so large changes may sound unnatural. Compare a spoken phrase, a sustained note and a section with strong transients. Use a smaller interval if consonants, drums or textures sound smeared or metallic. Keeping tempo does not guarantee identical timbre.

Prepare and export carefully

Use Trim Audio to test a short section before processing a full recording. Accepted files are mono or stereo MP3 and PCM WAV, one second to ten minutes and at most 30 MiB. For multiple edits, WAV avoids an additional MP3 encoding pass, but cannot recover detail lost earlier.

Zero semitones bypasses the pitch filters while still exporting in the chosen format. WAV is 16-bit PCM; MP3 is lossy. Compare file sizes and use the bitrate guide if you need a smaller download. A pitch change is not a compression method.

Check the final recording

  1. Confirm the sign and number of semitones.
  2. Create the result and compare it with the original.
  3. Check actual duration and listen to both the opening and ending.
  4. Download the finished copy and retain the source.

Changing the shift clears the old result. Choosing another file resets the control to zero. If processing fails, try a shorter recording; see processing help for browser and download issues.
