Change MP3 bitrate in your browser
Use this MP3 bitrate converter to export audio at 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps. Start with an MP3 or uncompressed PCM WAV, choose the delivery setting you need, then listen to the actual converted file before downloading. Your audio is processed on your device and is not uploaded to a server.
How to convert MP3 bitrate
- Select your audio file, or try the bundled music sample. The first file loads the browser audio engine.
- Choose an MP3 bitrate. The default is 192 kbps; select a different preset when your delivery specification requires it.
- Optionally enable a fade-out to soften the ending. Both changes are applied from the original file in one export.
- Choose Create audio. Compare the original and processed audio with the players.
- Download the new MP3. Save it before leaving this page, as files are held in memory.
128 vs 192 vs 256 vs 320 kbps
Lower bitrates create smaller files. Higher bitrates use more data per second and can reduce compression artifacts when encoding a suitable original. Start by checking the requirements of the platform or person receiving your file. If there is no specified setting, compare a couple of exports using the same original recording.
For a three-minute track, audio payload is approximately 2.88 MB at 128 kbps, 4.32 MB at 192 kbps, 5.76 MB at 256 kbps and 7.20 MB at 320 kbps, using decimal units. Headers and tags add to these estimates. The tool displays actual file size after processing; its size display uses binary megabytes.
Read the MP3 bitrate and quality guide for a fuller comparison, including constant bitrate and variable bitrate.
Supported files and export settings
Import mono or stereo MP3, including VBR MP3, or uncompressed PCM WAV. The file limit is 30 MiB and ten minutes. Output uses constant-bitrate MP3 at the selected preset. A 48 kHz input keeps that sample rate; other supported inputs export at 44.1 kHz. Basic title, artist and album tags are copied where supported, but not every metadata field or embedded artwork is preserved.
The engine downloads from this site when needed. Processing speed and memory use depend on your device. For devices with limited memory, start with a short file and keep the tab open until processing finishes. If a file fails, see help and troubleshooting.
MP3 bitrate converter questions
Does 128 to 320 kbps restore sound quality?
No. Increasing bitrate cannot recover information discarded in an earlier encoding. It usually makes the file larger. Use a WAV original when available, or convert upward only to meet a required delivery format.
Can I reduce an MP3 file size?
Yes. A lower CBR preset generally reduces the encoded audio payload. Actual size depends on duration and tags. Compare the export before deciding whether the size saving is worth the audible change.
Can I convert VBR to CBR?
Yes. Supported VBR MP3 inputs are decoded and re-encoded at the chosen constant bitrate. This is an encoding operation, not an edit to the existing file header.
Can I convert several files at once?
The current workbench processes one file at a time. Download the result before selecting the next file. Selecting a new file clears the previous in-page result.
Can I also fade out the music?
Enable the fade-out setting here to combine it with the bitrate change. You can also start with the fade-out audio tool. Navigating to another page does not transfer the current file.
